Theory can be boring, but that is often because it has no context and we haven’t experienced the practical value. But theory can be a condensed distillation of years of experience and learning it can shortcut our road to mastery. Some theory will only make sense after applying it in practice. And we can only evaluate the efficacy of the theory through application.

Theory can be seductive though. By ‘reading’ and ‘watching’ we might believe that we are mastering a subject. It is too easy to keep reading and never ‘do’ anything, but if we never apply it then we never receive its full value.

Putting things into practice can be hard because we are learning new skills and we make mistakes. But to offset this we have the encouraging reward of an ‘output’.

But If we only learn how to ‘do’ then we can find ourselves limited by our experience. We might learn bad habits without realizing alternative approaches exist. Learning theory can widen our understanding and enrich our practice.

In “Lo”, 1931, Charles Fort wrote “One measures a circle, beginning anywhere.”

Start. Anywhere.

I don’t think it really matters if we start with the theory, or with the practice. Have the awareness that only pursuing one will limit you. And balance your learning across both.
