Slideshare bug impact - Instagram Post

The curse of the secret error message strikes again.

I often encounter web sites that use a lot of JavaScript to upload assets and make the user experience ‘better’. One such site is Slideshare.

Slideshare provides a form where you upload the deck, add a title, description, tags, category etc. Then press publish and… sometimes it just hangs there with the publish button disabled and you aren’t sure if it is working or not.

I check the network tab and there is no traffic.

I decided on a workaround. At the main form - upload the deck then copy and paste the title into title and desc field and submit. Then after it was uploaded, edit the details.

And then in the edit field I was able to see the problem. My description was too big. But the user friendly upload form didn’t tell me that, it just hung.

Lesson: if you can edit after upload then upload the minimum and fix in the edit.
